Grand Canal of Venice by Thomas Moran

$41,500.00

This delicate pastel and gouache on paper captures the viewpoint from the entrance of the Grand Canal in Venice, the ancient waterway that snakes around centuries-old architecture. In the calm blue waters, boats sail leisurely toward the sun-kissed bold architecture of the Basilica di San Marco on the left, and familiar façade of the Doge’s Palace on the right, St. Mark’s Campanile located in the Piazza San Marco just beyond. Signed lower left corner with conjoined initials “TMoran”.

The atmospheric and strong colourist qualities Moran has recorded in this work emulate those found in the work of J.M.W. Turner. Moran had a strong admiration of the English artist, whose work he viewed in London while visiting in the early 1860s.

A member of the Hudson River School in New York, Moran produced many Venetian scenes with reverence of its natural beauty; capturing the luminescent reflection of the water as it dances on the architecture and the many moods of vast skyscape became a familiar composition for Moran, one he often revisited.
