In his later life, Tissot turned to religious topics, treating them with a degree of topographic and archeological allusion. A distinguished Pre-Raphaelite artist, Tissot's inspiration for his remarkable biblical illustrations comes from his transformative religious experience in the Parisian church of Saint-Sulpice in 1885. It caused him to abandon his successful life as a painter of British and French society life to travel to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine in 1886-1887, and again in 1889 where he visited all of the Holy sites. The ultimate goal of these travels was to produce a series of paintings for an illustrated biography of Jesus, and this later illustrated monumental Bible. This stunning copy is one of the 500 printed on Grand Vélin paper. Inside of flaps foxed, with minor abrasion along folds. Very minor age-toning and sporadic creasing along edges of both chemises. Minor and sporadic creasing on a few tissue-guards. Text in French. Boxes in overall good+ to very good, portfolios in very good, chemises in good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.
