A pair of bronze elephant bookends with brown patina mounted on wooden stands by French sculptor Ary Bitter. Engraved “Ary Bitter Sclp Susse Fres Edrs Paris” on bronze plaque on one base. Ary Jean Leon Bitter (French, 1883–1973) was a French artist, best known for his animal sculptures. He was a designer, painter, and sculptor in various mediums including plaster, stone, terracotta and bronze. His work was also produced in biscuit by the Sèvres factory. Bitter studied with Louis-Ernest Barrias at the École national supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before becoming a celebrated and regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français. Bitter made both small and monumental works, and his sculptures can be found in several museums including the Musée d'Orsay (Paris).
