Feeding Time (c. 1870) by John Frederick Herring Jr.
Known for his equine pictures and portraits of famous race horses, the artists John Frederick Herring, Jr. (1820 -1907) was very popular among nineteenth-century English nobility. Unlike his depictions of thoroughbreds, this painting depicts a quite moment as the horses feed. We see the horses from behind, at an angle which demonstrates Herring's mastery of anatomy and perspective. The result transports the viewer to the English countryside.
