Desert Cottonwoods (c. 1945) by James (Jimmy) Guilford Swinnerton
Born in California, the painter, illustrator, and cartoonist James Swinnerton (American, 1875 - 1974), studied at the California School of Art under Emil Carlsen and, soon after, was hired by William Randolph Hearst to become an illustrator and cartoonist for the New York Journal. Even as a successful commercial artist, Swinnerton continued to paint fine oil landscape of Western scenes, such as this work, titled "Desert Cottonwoods."
