Comforting Mother (c. 1875) by Gustave De Jonghe
Oil on Canvas
24 x 18 in.
Jonghe worked in Paris and his native Brussels, where his paintings of beautiful women in luxurious interiors were extremely popular. In this work, a young girl comforts her mother with a bouquet of flowers. The mantle is garnished with blanc de chine and other porcelains. On the wall hangs a genre painting of a happy family. This device of a portrait within a portrait expands the narrative of scene, making the painting more than just a portrait or a moment.
