Brigham Young by Hartwig Bornemann

A very fine and rare nineteenth-century portrait of Brigham Young (American, 1801 - 1877), c. 1875, President and Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (i.e. Mormon Church) by the artist Hartwig Bornemann (German, 1837 - 1875), whose works can be found in the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). Signed " "From life by H. Bornemann," the artist made the work while visiting Salt Lake in 1875. While similar lithographs are held various national collections, this particular work belonged to the Church until the late nineteenth century. It was recently rediscovered in a group of historic portraits commissioned by Brigham Young. The elaborate, custom carved and gilt framing attests to it holding a place of honor equal to the best works found in early LDS Temple and Church collections.
