Ebonized baleen pen stand inlaid with a motif of tusk rounds, and scrimshaw whale teeth depicting a commemorative attribution to an American sailor. The teeth are engraved with the words “Ship” and “Hero”, and are accompanied with detailed renderings of impressive two-masted ships. The stand is complete with a well-presented steel-tipped pen and original ink well. Scrimshaw is an art form that was practiced commonly by sailors working on whaling ships in the late 18th century. Pictures or designs were etched on the bone, and then highlighted using pigment rubbed into the engraved areas.
