Alpine Lake (1870) by Jean François Xavier Roffiaen

(Belgian, 1820 - 1898)

Oil on canvas

Collected by Queen Victoria, the Royal Family of Belgium, and the Shah of Persia, Jean François Xavier Roffiaen was among the most admired landscape painters of the nineteenth century. Roffiaen came from a humble Belgian family, studied at the École de Beaux-arts in Brussels and then travelled throughout Europe and the near east. Eventually settling in the Meuse and Ourthe Valleys of Belgium, Roffiaen’s carefully observed works of naturalism were admired and sought after by prominent collectors throughout the world.
