This painting is to commemorate Belle Smith's courageous descent through the Hole in the Rock passage. She and her husband (Joseph Stanford Smith) descended unaided and abandoned down the treacherous cliffside to the Colorado river 1,800 feet below. January 26, 1880. As part of the San Juan Mission settlement sent by President John Taylor.
