A Portrait of a Florentine Gentleman (c. 1875) by Vassili V. de Cheremeteff

Trained in Germany and France, the Russian artist Vassili Vassilievitch de Cheremeteff (1829 - c. 1910) here demonstrates his understanding of Renaissance masters by doing a portrait — perhaps a self portrait — in the style of the Florentine artists Pantormo (1494 -1557). The quality of the figure, the varied textures of the costume, and array of colors is a testament to Cheremeteff's broad arsenal — the kind achieved by only a few of his contemporary Russian artists, such as Ilya Repin.
