A Large Wrought Iron Sculpture of a Mature Grapevine

Purchased in Saint-Étienne, this wrought-iron sculpture is the graduation work of a journeyman sculptor making his name as a master. As a result, the work is a showcase of his talent as an artist and craftsman. The tight composition and the verisimilitude of the work testify to the artists' ability to depict a large arsenal of metalworking techniques (e.g. combing, incising, cold chasing, and smithing) that result in a dazzling array of textures, from the soft appearance of the grapes to leaf veins and difference between the mature vines and young shoots.
