Hermann Herzog was born in Bremen, Germany in 1832 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1849 with some of the most influential teachers of that time. He sold his works to several of Europe’s royal families, including Queen Victoria of England, Grand Duke Alexander of Russia, Countess of Flanders, and Duke Ernest of Saxe-Coburg-Gothe. He exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1863 and 1864, winning an award, as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts the same year.

He settled in Philadelphia in 1869 and traveled and painted all over the West Coast. He became well-known for his depictions of Yosemite and actively painted even into his one-hundredth birthday. His works are now part of the permanent collections of the New York Public Library, Memorial Hall in Philadelphia, Cincinnati Art Museum and the Reading Museum in the United States. His works are also found in museums in Hanover and Mulhouse in Germany.
