"Panther Attacking a Stag" (Panther attaquant un cerf) by Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875)

Barye was a sculptor of animal subjects, especially wild game such as lions, tigers, and elephants. These sculptures have been praised for their realistic depictions of anatomy due to Barye's close study of live animals at the Paris Zoo. Barye exhibited in the Paris Salon and his patrons included the French Royal Family. In 1854 he became Master of Zoological Drawing at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle where Auguste Rodin numbered among his pupils.
