Shikeyah at Sunset by Rachel Williams

I met Shikeyah through her mother-in-law who is a friend of mine. She is from the Navajo and Spokane tribes. She is very proud of her Native American heritage and is wearing turquoise jewelry given to her from her family's collection. Her uncle makes turquoise and silver jewelry which she helps to sell along with Navajo rugs her family makes. She is also learning to weave rugs by hand on traditional looms. When I asked if she would pose for me so that I could paint her she was honored and wore traditional clothing with her long beautiful hair in a traditional Navajo bun. She is living in Utah Valley and posed for me in front of Lone Peak at sunset. Oil on linen. 23 x 29 in.
