Born on the Amalfi Coast to a family of painters, Gaetano Capone moved to America during the last quarter of the 19th century. He had a studio on 5th Avenue in New York, and travelled widely, including having solo exhibitions in New Orleans and San Francisco. This work was most likely done while traveling through the Southwest, where he met the artists E. Irving Couse and Joseph Sharp. It shows his remarkable master of the human figure combined with a sensitizing for color.
