(American, 1859-1937)

Daniel in the Lion's Den, after Briton Riviere

Oil on Canvas

29 1/2 x 43 in

Tenner was the first internationally acclaimed African-American artist. This work, "Daniel in the Lion's Den," is done after the work of artist Briton Riviere, where Tanner could have seen a print of the original while studying with Eakins in Pennsylvania. Tanner did his own Daniel in the Lion's Den for the Paris Salon 6 years later. Therefore, it is likely that this piece planted the seed for what would become Tanner's most famous work.
