Canning Tower by Henry Lavender Adolphus Culmer

$14,500.00

In 1903 — only seven years after Utah was admitted into the Union as a State — HLA Culmer (English/American, 1854-1914) led an expedition to explore Southern Utah. Sponsored by the Utah Commercial Club, the venture was meant to be an exploration of the region’s natural resources; but, with Culmer’s artistic contribution, became among the first visual records of Utah’s Red Rock territory. This watercolor and gauche painting is a rare example of the trip that would be published in the 1907 March edition of National Geographic, which recorded the expedition’s works “completed by the artist H.L.A. Culmer, from photograph, sketches, water colors, and measurements taken at the time of the visit . ."
